Definition: “Social Media” is websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. It includes Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Linkedin, etc
Definition: “Retargeting” (also known as remarketing, ) is a form of online targeted advertising by which online advertising is targeted to consumers based on their previous Internet actions. If someone clicked on an ad to go to a website the information is stored on the person’s computer for future use to save time and user preferences. This is called a “Cookie”.
Definition: “Cookie” also know as an An HTTP cookie (also called web cookie, Internet cookie, browser cookie, or simply cookie) is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser while the user is browsing. Without cookies being stored on your computer, you would need to continually log into a website every time the page was refreshed. Each time you visited a website it would be like the first time you visited with no user preferences stored. The following are the types/variations of cookies: Session Cookies: Created for a specific session, these expire upon the termination of the user’s browser session. Persistent Cookies: Normally known as tracking cookies, these cookies have a specific time period before they expire. Secure Cookies: When a user is accessing the server through HTTPS, secure cookies are used to provide maximum security to user data through encryption.
Now that we have the definitions cleared up, we will go into further detail. Let’s say you are advertising a service on Facebook. A person clicks on your ad and is taken to your website. They view the page but does not buy it yet. Without the Social Media re-targeting in place that person may not see your ad again unless they are specifically looking for it. In order for the re-targeting of your ads to work, you would need to create a Google ads account. From that account you can also link to Facebook ads so you can track from one source. There is a bit of code that is stored on your website that actually does the tracking. Once that is in place when a person clicks on the ad and visits your website, they will continue to see your products and services on other social media pages where you advertise.
